1967 BSA Royal Star
Kas has finally decided to let the Royal Star go! Those of you who are familiar with our rides and activities of the past will remember this bike as Kas' first British motorcycle, and some of her exploits with it over the years. She hasn't ridden it in years, mostly because she fits the Triumph TR6 much better, and it has been just as reliable as the Royal Star. I got the Royal Star out recently, serviced it, and took it on a 100 mile breakfast ride to check it out, so it is ready to go! Following is a write-up that covers most of the important features and specifications of the bike.
This 1967 BSA Royal Star is very original, with the exception of the 650 cc motor upgrade, which makes it a whole lot more enjoyable to ride. Most people cannot see any difference in appearance from the original 500 cc engine, as it involves the number of cooling fins on the cylinder, and little else. The engine cases are original and have the correct and matching serial numbers as the frame. The bike is titled, as it should be, as the original A50R. Only the engine internals, cylinder and head have been changed.
This machine is in excellent mechanical condition, and suffers only cosmetically from faded original paint and the usual chips, dings and scrapes from age. My wife, Kas, bought the bike in 1984 and rode it as her only bike for a couple of years, until the TR6 came along, after which the BSA was ridden only occasionally. The bike came to us with no speedometer, so I have no idea of the actual total mileage, but I can say that there is only about 2,000 miles on the engine since it was rebuilt as a 650 in 1990. Although the bike is quite original and stock, there have been several upgrades (other than the 650 spec. motor) that enhance the rideability as well as the reliability. The two most significant are the AMR-rebored 930 Amal Concentric carburetor, which takes all of the guesswork out of holding an idle, and the Boyer-Bransden electronic ignition. Additionally, there is the Lucas European Quartz Halogen headlight conversion, and the MAP Cycle oil filter system that utilizes the T150/160 Trident oil filter cartridge.
This bike is definitely a rider and is ready to go. It needs nothing. It was recently serviced and taken on a 100 mile Sunday breakfast ride, which it handled beautifully, with no running or starting problems, and virtually no leaks! How’s that for 42 year old Brit twin that has never been restored! Everything on this bike works as it should, including the horn. The only missing part that I can think of is the tire pump, but the brackets are still there. It still has the original zipper tool bag and tools behind the oil tank. Cosmetically, besides the faded paint (I do believe that it has the original paint with the factory hand pinstriping), it has a dent in the top rear of the right hand muffler, and someone squared off the rear lip of the front fender.
I have a lot of good history with this machine, and I’m not that excited about selling it, but Kas says it can go, and it just isn’t being ridden or appreciated like it should be anymore, so I hope it finds a good home.
